Zebra Migration Day Trip
Overview
You're timing this perfectly for the start of Botswana's green season—November marks the onset of rains that trigger the zebra migration from Boteti River to the Makgadikgadi Pans and Nxai Pan national park. While the full spectacle (up to 30,000 zebras) peaks in December–January, early November often sees the vanguard herds arriving along the Boteti River, drawn by initial grass flushes and waterholes. Khumaga Village (just outside the park) enroute to Makgadikgadi Pans National Park are prime spots for sightings, especially around the riverbed where zebras gather to drink and graze. Expect smaller groups (hundreds to low thousands) now, but with vibrant birdlife, springbok, and possible wildebeest. If rains have started, the landscape will green up dramatically.
5:30 AM: Depart Gweta
Head west on the A3 (Phuduhudu Gate), then south into the park (~30 km to Boteti River crossing, +5 km to Khumaga). Roads are sandy but passable in early November if no heavy rain yet—drive across the dry riverbed.
From the gate, follow the river south towards Boteti river. Scout waterholes for zebras quenching thirst—early light is magical for photos. Look for lions or hyenas trailing the herds. Side tracks may yield giraffes and oryx in the acacia scrubs.
